In North America, the trade of horseshoeing is completely unregulated. Thus, anyone wishing to set up in the business may do so all too often creating a "buyer beware" type of environment. This was always an unacceptable situation in the sport of horse racing, where horses can easily be valued in the millions of dollars. Therefore governing bodies of racing have always had testing and licensing of those who wished to ply their trade at racetracks. The JHU has always been able to stand behind their membership as being the best trained most competent in the industry. It has worked well for the racing community for many years. For those owners and trainers of riding, driving, and other types of horses the JHU can make the same claim. Each and every member of the JHU has been peer tested and approved as a condition of membership. The JHU is the only such organization that has a tried and true, structured, apprenticeship program, followed by the most challenging entrance examination in the industry. It can be said with relative certainty that if a horseman chooses a JHU horseshoer their choosing one of the best they can get.
